Testing a Webserver Directly

From time to time you might need to see what particular software a webserver is running or the raw data it is actually returning to the web browser. To do this you will need to telnet directly to the server at port 80 and enter the following command.

GET /theUrlYouWantToSee.html HTTP/1.1
Host: the.host.name.com

You can garner alot of information from this such as

  • Server Software
  • Header Details
  • Detailed Error Messages (Sometime hidden by IE)
  • Redirect calls sent to the browser
