Adding time sync daemon (ntpd) service to Redhat

Below is a basic summary of the commands required to install a ntp daemon onto your server to keep track of time.


Start by installing the daemon
yum install ntp

Then edit the configuration file. You will want to find the section that lists servers
vi /etc/ntp

Remove the servers that are there and add these pools for Australia

server 0.au.pool.ntp.org
server 1.au.pool.ntp.org
server 2.au.pool.ntp.org
server 3.au.pool.ntp.org

Check that the daemon is installed as a service
chkconfig --list ntpd

Quickly update your time with a known time server (more can be found here
ntpdate -u ntp.amnic.net

Start your service
service ntpd start

Set your service up to start on boot
chkconfig --level 345 ntpd on
