Outlook Mail Migration to Another Machine

If you have to migrate a user from one machine to another you will most likely have to move all of their mail over. Since most users store all their mail locally (I personally think this is ridiculous) you will need to copy over their outlook .pst file to the new machine.

The .pst file is generally located in
XP: c:\Documents and Settings\TheUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
Vista : C:\Users\TheUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

You will find that all mail settings however are not migrated with the pst file so if someone claims their ‘send recieve’ button is missing this is likely due to the fact that their mail accounts are not setup on outlook.

Alternatively if their accounts are setup try doing the following
Tools -> Customize. Then click the Toolbars tab. Choose the Standard toolbar, and press Reset.

Hopefully this will bring back you send recieve button.

Personally I think that everyone should use IMAP servers and keep ALL mail on the server. This however is not really an option for most mail accounts as they are quite limited in the volume of mail you can store there. I suggest as an alternate option that companies use gmail for storing of their corporate email. It costs $50 per user per year and the company can still use their domain name. They can continue to use outlook however ALL mail is stored on the server and migration of users is alot easier.
