Jailbreak 3.1.2

Posted in iPhone Hacking on October 26th, 2009 by phoenixdigital

To jailbreak the latest firmware for the iphone 3G just update your firmware using iTunes then download blackra1n and run it.

Once completed run blackra1n on your iPhone and install your preferred app installer.

It’s pretty simple. Please note however that noone has managed to unlock these recent firmwares so if you require a software unlock then either wait or follow one of the guides on the net for building a custom firmware without the baseband update.

One issue discovered is if you use DiskAid or iPhoneExplorer it appears blackra1n stops you accessing the root of the filesystem. The current fix if you require this access can be found here. Hopefully a newer version of blackra1n is released that takes care of this issue soon. Alternatively download afc2add from cydia.

iPhone 3.1 Jailbreak

Posted in iPhone Hacking on September 15th, 2009 by phoenixdigital

Add this hosts file entry into your system to allow Cydia to cache iTunes auth mechanism. This will enable you to downgrade your firmware in the future. more info

Currently only Jailbreak is possible on firmware 3.1 the update also upgrades your baseband which is the phonecall and modem component of your iPhone. This component is not downgradable or unlockable at present so unlocking is not possible with 3.1. If you need unlock features then don’t update until a hack is found for the baseband or at least until someone can stop the baseband upgrade happening when updating to 3.1.

If you are unsure of what the baseband is think of the iPhone OS as your computer and the baseband as your ADSL modem. Contained within the 3.1 update is an update to both the OS and the modem.

Currently for Mac users you can use the PWNAGE Tool to jailbreak on 3.1 more info

There will be more tools released in the coming days no doubt

JB Applications
The following are the common jailbreak applications that I use
SBSettings
WinterBoard
MxTube
Flashlight
Five Icon Dock
iRealSMS
Lockinfo
20 Second Lockscreen (works well in combination
with LockInfo)

iPhone Hacks and Important Directories Firmware 3.0.x

Posted in iPhone Hacking on August 12th, 2009 by phoenixdigital

This is a list of hacks I perform to my iPhone each time I do an upgrade. I do this to enable me to customise things and not be locked down to what Apple thinks I need.

Jailbreak It
Firstly you need to jailbreak your iPhone. This is currently done using redsn0w.
http://redsn0w.com/

File Management
Then I recommend installing iPhone Explorer which will allow you to move files between your iPhone and PC/Mac via the Apple USB cable.
http://www.iphone-explorer.com/
This can be achieved by SFTP (install OpenSSH in Cydia) but I find that a bit fiddly and also means you need to open up your iPhone wirelessly.

Replace SMS Alert Tones
You can then replace the SMS tones with custom ones
http://lifein0and1.com/2008/09/09/iphone-hacking-custom-ringtone-and-sms-notification/

SMS Database
/var/root/Library/SMS/sms.db
or
/User/Library/SMS

SMS Ringtone Locations
/System/Library/Audio/UISounds

Contacts
/User/Library/AddressBook

Change SMS Alert Tone Names
The above hacks will only change the audio of the SMS alert tones. To change the names as they appear in the list you will need to change a plist file on the iPhone. Please note I am not 100% sure how to edit a plist file on a PC so apologies windows users.

  • Download /Applications/Preferences.app/English.lproj/Sounds.strings
  • rename to Sounds.plist
  • Open up in Property List Editor
  • Change the names of the SMS tones (You will recognise them in here)
  • Ensure the plist file format is set to View->Property List Type -> iPhone Settings plist
  • Save
  • Rename to Sounds.strings
  • Upload to iPhone over the top of the old one
  • Restart Springboard

MobileInstallation.framework Hack Location
This can now be achieved by installing AppSync from Cydia. You will need to add the source http://cydia.hackulo.us to Cydia though. Please buy apps though and keep the development community going.

Adding back the battery Percentage Indicator
Install SBSettings from Cydia or Rock to have a toggle to reenable battery percent.

Note: When editing plist files above ensure the plist file format is set to View->Property List Type -> iPhone Settings plist before saving editted file.

Encoding Videos for iPhone and Xbox 360

Posted in iPhone Hacking, Tivo HD Hacking, TV, Xbox 360 Hacking on July 19th, 2009 by phoenixdigital

The following is a foolproof process for converting video’s from many formats to a format compatible with the iPhone and Xbox 360. I primarily use this method

  • archive recordings from my Tivo HD
  • converting xvid videos to be compatible with my iPhone
  • shinking large format mpeg or mpeg2 to lower size files without losing too much quality.
